What
is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? What
does CSA membership involve? Although each CSA farm makes its own arrangements with its members and has its own expectations of them, being involved with a CSA operation always means sharing the rewards as well as the risks of farming. The rewards include: enjoying the freshest produce available, often harvested the same day you receive it; knowing where, how and by whom your food is being produced; having a direct connection with the people who produce your food; and supporting the kind of stewardship that is good for the land as well as its people. The risks include weather and pests. Though formidable for small, self-sustaining farmers, these risks are bearable when shared by a group of subscribers. By linking together through CSA operations, farmers and consumers alike can benefit from an agriculture that provides beautiful and bountiful food while preserving the ecological and social basis necessary for coming generations to be so blessed. The
Farms in this Directory The farms listed in the 2010 Edition of the Twin Cities Region Community Supported Agriculture Farm Directory have paid a fee to the Land Stewardship Project to be included. The Land Stewardship Project is not a certification agency for Community Supported Agriculture farms and does not guarantee customer satisfaction. Please keep in mind that while membership in a CSA farm means sharing in the bounty of the season, it also means sharing in the risks. At times, raising food in the Upper Midwest can be made quite challenging by inclement weather, pest infestations and other factors beyond the farmers’ control. We encourage you to contact the farms directly and ask questions to determine what best fits with your needs, lifestyle and schedule. We recommend reading the “Selecting a CSA” and “Questions to Ask the Farmers” guides on pages three and four before beginning your search for a CSA operation that fits you best. Good luck as you take that first step into an exciting sector of our food system! Selecting
a CSA
*Ideas and wording used for this list taken from MACSAC, the Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition. Questions to Ask a CSA Farmer Below are a few questions that should be asked of any farmer you are considering entering into a CSA relationship with. Potential CSA members should not be shy about asking such questions — and a good CSA farmer should be forthcoming with answers. After all, this is about creating a trusting relationship built on good food, good stewardship and good friendships.

River Farms CSA Our 18-week season runs mid-June through mid-October. Your membership gets you a weekly box of the season’s finest, delivered to neighborhood sites across the greater metro area. The veggies we pack into your box each week will vary with the rhythms of the growing season. This means that in the early boxes you might see snap peas, broccoli, scallions and greens (among others). The heat of the summer will bring along garden favorites like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, summer squash and more. As we wind into fall, look for different varieties of winter squash, lots of roots and greens. We also participate in a program called Harvest for the Hungry, which works with regional farms to get fresh produce into local food pantries. Donations are matched 100 percent, and the money is used to purchase food from our farmers-in-training for the food pantries. Donations to either MFA or Harvest for the Hungry can always be added onto share prices. Please call or visit www.mnfoodassociation.org for more information on farm tours, CSA share details/sign-up, and MFA workshops/events. Big
Woods Farm A full share includes 17 weekly half-bushel distributions (8-30 pounds) of seasonal produce, available beginning in mid-June, at three locations: at the farm on Mondays, at Just Food Co-op in Northfield on Mondays or Thursdays, and in South Minneapolis near Lake Nokomis on Thursdays. Smaller households are encouraged to split a share with friends or neighbors of their choosing. Two festivals are held each season: a height-of-the-summer garlic and vegetable cookout, and a fall pumpkin and winter squash harvest potluck. At the latter, members help pick the squash and pumpkins, and take home a cache for the winter plus jack-o-lanterns for the doorstep. Members are welcome to visit the farm most anytime to work up a sweat in the garden or to simply wander about, enjoying the countryside. The chance to pick-your-own flowers, cherry tomatoes, basil and green beans, available as the summer progresses, is included with your share. In addition to a vegetable share, members of Big Woods Farm may add on a maple syrup, free-range egg, free-range chicken, and/or Thanksgiving turkey share, produced by our friends at L & R Poultry and Produce in nearby Wanamingo Township. Blackberry

We will be focusing our efforts on the promotion and preservation of heirloom vegetables and their invaluable seed genetics. We are synthetic- and chemical-free, and follow sustainable farming practices. As our farm develops we will be integrating a variety of components to support local biodiversity and wildlife, from implementing cobb materials for our raised beds, to engineering a living frost-hedge from native and fruiting plants and shrubs. Sixteen weekly shares will begin with cool season crops such as salads, beets and snow peas — varieties eaten in the 1700’s and 1800’s. Summer will continue with heirloom tomatoes, green beans, squash, cucumbers, potatoes and more. We will be extending our season through to early frost with the addition of winter squash, pumpkins and dry beans for soup — original Native American and early settler period seed stock. Each of our weekly boxes will include vegetable information, some of our favorite recipes and many other surprises along the way. A full share is a good size for a family of four, while a half-share will satisfy two veggie lovers. Weekly drop-offs will be available at the Just Food Coop in Northfield, local farmers’ markets within the Twin Cities area, as well as a home delivery option. Members are welcome! Please call 507-645-8214 or e-mail CannonRiverHeritageFarm@gmail.com for further information.
At Celestial Harvest we grow produce with utmost care for the land. We use only natural methods to grow 40 varieties of fruits and vegetables. We are committed to growing exceptionally tasty and nutritious produce. We apply our same stewardship ethic to growing feed for livestock. We grow hay (alfalfa and orchard grass and white/red clover and orchard grass) using only natural methods. We are on our second year of transition to organic certification by the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association (www.mncia.org). We use no pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers or genetically modified organisms. You will receive a box each week for 18 weeks. Choose a half share (for two) or a full share (feeds four). Each box contains a variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, berries, apples, melons and our weekly newsletter. We also offer payment plans. Your purchase of a “food share” assures you a share in our growing season—mid-June through mid-October. Over the course of the season, you will end up paying wholesale prices. Pick-up sites are in Minneapolis, Golden Valley and the farm. Limited delivery for 10 or more orders within the Twin Cities. Clinton Falls Farm We grow and offer a bountiful supply and several varieties of fruits, vegetables, fresh eggs and cut flowers at area farmers’ markets, as well as through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in and around the Twin Cities, Owatonna, Faribault and Mankato. Whether you select a large or small share, you will receive 18 weeks of the freshest in-season varieties, including (but not limited to) mixed spring greens and strawberries, summer melons and heirloom tomatoes, as well as fall root vegetables and winter squash. Additionally, we’ll provide the staples, including many varieties of herbs, carrots, onions and potatoes, as they become available. We also like to include interesting new items that perhaps you've not had a chance to try before. Your CSA membership also includes a weekly newsletter describing your share contents and providing recipes and nutritional information, as well as an open invitation to visit the farm for special events or bulk quantities of produce for canning and preserving. Please visit our website for more detailed information. We’d be honored to share with you our harvests, and to have you as a member of our growing farm family. Common Harvest Farm We grow 40+ different vegetables and herbs with an emphasis on the traditional favorites of green beans, potatoes, tomatoes and carrots. We typically deliver for a 19 to 20 week season, beginning the middle of June and ending in October. In addition to our regular vegetable share, we offer a fruit share. We have drop-sites in 13 Twin Cities locations, including seven sites in Minneapolis, four in St. Paul, one in Minnetonka, and in St. Louis Park. We have a fall festival each year that includes folk dancing and a potluck. Our members are welcome to visit the farm at any time. Our members often tell us that the simple act of eating locally is something that gives them hope. Consider joining us in eating well from the goodness and bounty of the earth. •

Our pick-up sites are Tuesday afternoon at the farm, and Thursday evenings at various sites in Minneapolis. First-time members will receive the cookbook From Asparagus to Zucchini to help with using all your vegetables as well as providing storage tips and nutrient content. Additional recipes, farm updates, health tips and a list of box contents can also be found on our website. For 2010, we are planning a series of on-farm seminars by experts on meal planning, cooking, nutrition and preserving. We hope you’ll join us! Crazy
Daisy Your share in the season’s harvest will start in late June/early July and run through to just after the first frost, usually in October. Last year that was 16 weeks with the last week being a double harvest. We offer two share sizes; the half share is the most popular option and is great for two to four people for a week. Large families and those who are heavy vegetable eaters will enjoy the full share option. Both options come with access to free extras such as fresh herbs, and a weekly e-newsletter with farm news and our favorite recipes. Typically, there is an abundance of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and corn that will be available for canning, freezing or pickling at no extra cost. Let us know your preferences and we’ll fill your needs as best we can. We’re looking forward to meeting some new people in the coming season and in seeing some of our old friends again! Call or e-mail to request a flyer with detailed crop information, price options and locations. Culinary
Delights Farm CSA creates a direct relationship between a member and our farm — a partnership. In essence, it is a mutually beneficial arrangement, where in exchange for a member’s commitment to buy a share in our harvest, we commit to provide exceptionally high quality vegetables, herbs and fruits and deliver a bountiful portion of it every week of the season. The members of our CSA program every week receive a share of fresh, naturally grown, in-season produce delivered to a convenient location. We are located northwest of the Twin Cities with delivery points in Albertville, Anoka, Blaine, Champlin, Elk River, Maple Grove, Monticello, Plymouth, Ramsey, St. Michael, as well as pick-up at the farm in Big Lake. Our season runs over 18 weeks, starting in late June and ending in late October. Call or e-mail us for member information and a sign-up form.

East Henderson Farm Josh grew up on the farm that has been in his family for four generations. It was a working dairy farm until the 1980s, and we’re working hard to revitalize the farm and raise a family by growing vegetables and livestock sustainably. We are proud to call the community of Henderson our home. We have a passion for building restoration and re-use, and many of our farm buildings have been moved in or re-built from salvaged materials. Our farm is 40 acres, including wooded ravines, pasture, fields and the farm-site. We have a deep appreciation for the natural world and ecology, which is why we have chosen to pursue organic certification, a system that produces food in harmony with nature. The soil is alive, and it is our responsibility to maintain that life, ultimately helping us grow nutritious and healthy crops. Pick-up sites are in Minneapolis, Henderson, the St. Peter Food Co-op and at the farm.
Eener's Farm Full and half shares are available at reasonable prices. Deliveries are weekly and start the second week in June and continue for 21 weeks through the last week in October. Delivery sites: Fresh and Natural Foods in Hudson, River Market Co-op in downtown Stillwater and Hampden Park Co-op in St. Paul (928 Raymond Ave.). Each share includes at least 40 varieties of vegetables and a small selection of herbs. Eener grows pretty much all the classic garden veggies plus a few oddities. As an added bonus, members sporadically receive bouquets of flowers, Eener’s free-range chicken eggs and other treats. Eener’s goat, lamb and pig meat will be available for sale in the fall. Farmer-to-Farmer coffee shares are also available. Everything grown on Eener’s Farm is done so in a sustainable manner without the use of chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers. Please see Eener’s website for share rates, more CSA details and whacky farm antics. Members are not required to work on the farm. They are welcome to visit and encouraged to attend the Big Fall Harvest Party Fest which is held at the farm in October and involves a bonfire, food, farm tours and pumpkins. Featherstone Fruits &
Vegetables The summer season runs from June through October and distributes Grande and Chica shares of fruits and vegetables in pre-packed boxes. Our winter shares extend the season for shareholders into November and December. Drop-off days traditionally range from Tuesday through Friday in Winona, Rochester and the Twin Cities as well as an on-farm pickup option. Shareholders keep in touch with the farm through activities and electronic sources, including a redesigned website/blog, Twitter, and Facebook. Shareholders are invited to set up a visit with their family by advance call. They are also invited to attend farm-organized events, including a spring Strawberry Social (u-pick) and Fall Harvest Party. We offer an array of more than 40 vegetables; including leaf lettuce, salad mix, heirloom tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, onions, peppers, carrots, peas, beans, potatoes and sweet corn. We also provide fruits like strawberries, raspberries, cantaloupes and watermelons. We round out the boxes with a selection of herbs throughout the season, including basil, dill and rosemary.
Footjoy
Farm Our shares run about 20 weeks, starting in June. In the first weeks you will see a lighter mix of salad greens, lettuce, green garlic, peas, radishes, rhubarb and broccoli. As we get into the summer you will see an abundance of beans, zucchini, beets, carrots, cucumbers, eggplants, red peppers, onions, garlic, shallots, melons, herbs, potatoes, turnips and heirloom tomatoes. We produce many other specialty crops for the restaurants; at times they find their way into the CSA shares and make for wonderful surprises. You won’t be disappointed with the quality nor quantity of the produce in our shares. When the season allows for abundance, we provide it, giving away boxes of heirloom tomatoes and other extras to our members. We have several drop-sites around the Twin Cities but are looking for new members to host drop-sites in the Uptown and Downtown areas. Please call for more details. •

• Fresh Earth Farms Unlike a traditional CSA, we provide a flexible approach that allows for families of all sizes—as well as small restaurants—to become members. We accomplish this by selling shares by household size. Single households buy one share. Couples buy two. A family of four gets four shares. Our produce selection each year is both traditional and unusual. On the one hand we provide food that is familiar and comfortable for most families. On the other hand, we also experiment with the unusual; we grow varieties that aren’t generally available in local stores or that are not typically grown here in Minnesota. At Fresh Earth Farms you will find more than 20 varieties of tomatoes, seven varieties of potatoes and 10 varieties of garlic. Many varieties are heirlooms. Typically we grow over 150 different fruits, vegetables and herbs. Be adventurous and try something new! In addition to our delicious vegetables, we also resell certified organic fruit; Fair Trade, certified organic coffee; grass-fed beef, pork and chicken; and raw cheese from grass-fed cows — all from small, family farms, ranches and orchards! Join Fresh Earth Farms today! Homegrown freshness, without getting dirty! Gale Woods Farm The CSA operation at Gale Woods is unique because it involves teenage youth from the nearby suburbs and the cities in growing produce for the shares. In addition to learning about sustainable agriculture, they are given leadership training opportunities and are inspired to create positive change in their home communities. Produce is also provided to needy families through the Mound West-Tonka foodshelf. Shareholders are encouraged to get involved with the farm for events such as maple syruping, lambing and calving in the spring, as well as assisting the youth farmers on workdays. The produce season runs from mid-June to early October. There are also egg and meat shares available. Shares are picked up at the farm.

Finca In addition to our summer share we offer fall, winter and chicken shares. The fall share (October-November) contains the best of the fall crops with plenty of veggies that can be stored throughout the early winter. Our frozen winter share contains many of the favorite summer and fall vegetables as well as prepared foods such as soups and tomato sauces. Vegetables for the winter share are harvested and processed at their peak of freshness and frozen for delivery in December and January. Laughing Stalk Farmstead We offer the Twin Cities a unique kind of CSA membership called Build Your Own Box where one can choose the vegetables they want, in the quantities they want. Don’t like rutabaga? Can’t eat that much kale? Going to be gone part of the summer? The BYOB Share is offered at three different levels and works like a gift certificate. Members also receive a 10 percent discount, a weekly newsletter and a homemade bag to pick up their vegetables. Those new to CSA farms will find it less of a commitment as well as offering lots of flexibility. This type of share also works well for one-person households, gardeners and travelers. Vegetables can be picked up between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays at the new Uptown Farmer’s Market in Minneapolis (located on 29th St. between Lyndale and Dupont and just off the Greenway bike path). We will be growing all of the basics such as salad mix, tomatoes, cucumbers and melons. We farm using organic practices but are not yet certified. We feed our soil with compost, green manures, and organic fertilizers. It treats us well and we do the same back. Check out our blog at http://laughingstalkfarmstead.blogspot.com and become a fan on Facebook!
Little Flower Farm “Here on the land, and on the land alone, is all to be found. Everything that crowds the city shops, and makes town-life possible must have been one day taken from the open hand of the earth… Here, and here alone, is the world’s cleansing place where all the dross of human life is given back its cradle innocence.” — Fr. Vincent McNabb Little Flower Farm is a family-run CSA farm located in Marine on St. Croix, Minn. We offer our members 18 weeks of fresh, chemical-free vegetables during the growing season and deliver to drop-sites in Stillwater, White Bear Lake and the Twin Cities. We also offer free-range eggs and shares of pastured broiler chickens, pork, lamb and cabrito. We farm the old-fashioned way — with scythes, strawstacks and song! We focus on putting animals back to work on the farm. The dairy goats suppress the invasive buckthorn in our woods, our pigs plow the grain plots, and our rabbits mow the lawn and fertilize the garden. The laying hens keep our sheep free from worms and both animals mow and fertilize our pasture. To us, sustainability means land not only healed, but perfected through the use of mulches, natural soil enrichment, cover crops, crop rotations and integrated animal systems. Our success is measured by increased soil and plant fertility, water conservation and — best of all — healthy, delicious, handcrafted local food grown with joy for our neighbors. E-mail us for an application and visit us on the Internet for more information: littleflowerfarmcsa@gmail.com; www.littleflowerfarmcsa.blogspot.com.

Experience secluded peaceful camping and canoeing on pristine Little Horseshoe Lake and the natural wonder of the land by hiking in the woods and fields. Summer or winter, the horses love to give hay rides. During 2010, Little Footprint Farm is offering CSA shares starting around mid-June through mid-October (approx. 18 weeks). Becoming a member of our CSA is not only about access to good food, it is about participating in the ecological and natural community that supports life. The oil tanker is sinking. Come aboard our lifeboat!
We offer full and 1/2 share sizes. One full share is 18 weeks of boxes containing 10-15 different vegetable crops that should be enough for a family of four, or a voracious veggie eatin’ couple. A 1/2 share is a full box every other week and is great for beginners and dabblers (nine weeks of boxes). CSA pick-ups are at our farm a few miles west of Hutchinson, at our booth at the Mill City Farmers’ Market on Saturdays (very limited spots available for 2010), and at the Applehouse in Chanhassen. More information is available at our website: www.loonorganics.com. Marshwatch Farms Members also receive Chef Joe’s recipes, Terrie’s preserving tips, the Marshwatch Mews and invitations to farm day events. Members are invited to visit the farm and enjoy the educational opportunities, including our bluebird walk and children’s garden. CSA: Mid-June to October Mhonpaj’s Garden CSA Each delivery will include 6 to 10 different veggies. We include over 50 varieties of vegetables and herbs. As an organic farm we will have this year heirloom varieties of tomatoes, cucumber, cilantro, greens, lettuce, potatoes, squash, cabbage, radish, turnips, snap peas, spinach and many more. This CSA is unique because we will include exotic Asian greens, vegetables and herbs, along with your lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, squash, herbs and more. We have three locations as drop-sites in Minneapolis, Roseville and White Bear Lake, or visit us at the St. Paul Farmers’ Market. As a local member, you get fresh certified organic vegetables delivered the next day from the garden. My MN Farmer As your farmers we will strive to offer the best, freshest and most delicious produce around. We also have egg shares that include one dozen or one half-dozen eggs weekly during the CSA season. We sell young, tender, tasty, broiler chickens raised on grass and sunshine in the spring of the year as another way to feed your family with utmost confidence that what you are eating is quality food. Our farm is situated on 40 acres, three miles west of Montgomery, Minn. Over the past five years we have been growing the farm piece- by-piece, each year growing more food on healthier soils. We are committed to growing our food free of chemicals in a natural and sustainable way and providing that food to you in its freshest, simplest form. We love to show you how your food is grown. We offer more than 30 different varieties of fruits and vegetables over an approximately 18-week CSA season. We love to have members come out to the farm. As a benefit of picking up your produce at the farm, we allow you to pick any “extras” we have been blessed with. We also offer delivery to Shakopee. We celebrate with “on the farm” events. Allow us the opportunity to become your farmer. Nitty Gritty Dirt Farm We are intentional about our chemical-free, sustainable farming practices, including maximizing soil health through green and animal manures, compost, mulch, cover crops and crop rotations. We also use pesticide-free pest management to naturally monitor, prevent and control insects and other pests and maintain animal health and well-being through the use of loose housing and pasture rotations. We are also intentional about creating community and personal well-being through our connections with the land and its abundance — we invite you to share in that with us. Three farm festivals provide opportunities for visiting the farm to meet the farmers, as well as learn about chemical-free farming, good land stewardship and sustainable living. Other farm activities include workshops on farm crafts and music. •

North
Creek Community Farm Drop-off sites are located throughout the Twin Cities metro area. Popular farm events happen throughout the summer, including a Garlic Harvest and overnight Corn Feed. I have added many special additions to each week’s bag over the years such as the “salsa pack”—all the ingredients for delicious salsa in one bag with a recipe. This is just one example of the surprises that are in store for you at North Creek Community Farm. Have a farm you can call your “own!” Philadelphia Community

Shares start in mid-June and go until Thanksgiving and include over 40 types of vegetables and herbs as they come into season. Extra vegetables for preserving are included when available. Hill Farm This year we will offer 50 shares (weekly or bi-weekly). Beginning in mid-June, you pick up your share at a pre-arranged drop point. We have drop-sites in St. Paul near Hamline, Uptown (28th and Lyndale), South Minneapolis (near Xerxes and 50th), and locally in Wisconsin. We emphasize variety and quality, including over 10 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, various types of greens and salad mixes, and a few new things each year to make it interesting. We deliver in grocery-sized reusable bags with an eye towards presentation. Some weeks there are cut flowers and other extras. There will be a planting day in early June and a harvest and cider pressing party in mid-September. A weekly e-newsletter contains recipes, updates and musings on farming. We are constantly adapting our growing practices to be as sustainable as possible and use no chemical inputs...because vegetables are supposed to be good for you! Available as a separate add-on to your share is our pure maple syrup, and possibly later in the summer we will offer our honey for the first time. Please e-mail us for a brochure and a full list of produce we grow. Ploughshare
Farm Weekly deliveries to our CSA members include an array of garden staples, gourmet and specialty crops. As a family of six ourselves (four young boys under the age of 12) we keep in mind what families want to eat. In order to assist families with the basics of eating “in-season” vegetables, we offer weekly newsletters telling about the goings-on at the farm and including recipes. We have cooking classes yearly, a farm festival in the fall as well as a June pea pick. The name “Ploughshare” symbolizes how our work for justice is connected with our family’s passion for growing premium produce and being good stewards of the land. We deliver weekly over a period from mid-June to mid-October. We have drop-sites at central locations in Minneapolis, Minnetonka, New Hope, Rogers, St. Paul, St. Cloud, Fergus Falls and Alexandria. In addition to our regular CSA shares we also offer fall storage shares and frozen winter shares. •

• Prairie Sun Farm The farm, which was primarily corn and soybeans before we purchased it, sits on 40 acres with wetlands and prairie surrounding it. During the past five years we have been transitioning it from a conventional, monoculture farm into a diversified, productive landscape. Cover crops are used to enhance the soil and provide weed control, and 10 acres of prairie provide habitat for wildlife and beneficial insects. The weekly or bi-weekly shares will be available for pick-up at the farm and in downtown Chaska at Dolce Vita Wine Shop on Thursdays. Come join us for our inaugural year and share in the rewards of healthy eating. Call, e-mail us or visit our website at www.prairiesunfarm.com for more information. Reimann
Family Farm Depending on the weather, deliveries generally start the second week of June and run through at least the end of September. We harvest and deliver on Mondays, and offer three pick-up sites: at the farm, in downtown Anoka, and near Powderhorn Park in South Minneapolis. We offer a variety of vegetables and herbs throughout the season (a detailed list is available on the website). Most years maple syrup and honey are also available for purchase. Our produce is sustainably-grown without chemicals. We enhance our soil with compost, mulch, cover crops and careful rotations. We provide habitat for wild critters by protecting our forests, wetlands and riverbanks. We also attract beneficial insects and pollinators with host plants like dill, parsley and native prairie plants. If you have any questions, we are happy to talk with you about our growing practices. Each season we try to offer opportunities for members to get to know each other and us, such as optional garden work days and a harvest potluck dinner. More details (plus pictures of each week’s box from last season) are available at our website: www.ReimannFamilyFarm.com. Riverbend
Farm All of our produce is certified organic and sustainably grown through cover crop and crop rotation systems, composting and use of green manures. We are active in the Local Fair Trade Network as well. You can be sure that your CSA share will support your health as well as the health of our community. Our 18-week delivery season will provide you with a diverse array of delicious, fresh-from-the-fields, seasonal produce. We also grow many heirloom varieties to ensure that your meal-plan will never lack in color, flavor or an abundance of choices. In addition, we offer extra produce (at an additional cost) for families interested in canning, freezing, etc., to ensure that their diet is as local as possible year-round. Spring Farm Our summer vegetable share contains eight to 14 items in meal-sized quantities. Many of our CSA members have found themselves eating more vegetables—with less fuss from the children—because of the freshness and flavor of our produce. And because we take pride in the cleanliness of our vegetables, it is simple to go from the box to the table. In addition to the standard CSA share, we offer an early spring share, a winter share (storage crops and salad greens from our greenhouses) and a fruit share. Our Friday afternoon delivery sites include Grand Avenue in St. Paul; 50th and France in Minneapolis; Seward Co-op and Linden Hills Food Co-op in Minneapolis; both Mississippi Markets in St. Paul; Lakewinds Natural Foods in Chanhassen; and Rochester. A weekly newsletter with farm news, information about the produce, and original recipes from our kitchen accompanies every box. Certification is your guarantee that we not only act organic, we follow all of the rules that make “organic” a meaningful label. Spring
Hill Community Farm We grow over 35 different vegetables and herbs and round out our vegetable production with a few beehives and a sugar bush for maple syrup. Our standard share typically includes 18-20 weeks of vegetables with an emphasis on the basics—carrots, potatoes, beans, tomatoes, onions and lettuce. We also offer an every-other-week share and a one-time winter delivery. Joining Spring Hill includes a work requirement. Each household comes to the farm at least once during the season to harvest and wash vegetables, visit with the farmers and other members and deliver packed bags of fresh veggies to the Twin Cities. Members are also welcome to participate in workdays and seasonal celebrations. We invite you to join us in our 19th season. You’ll experience the richness of this community, know the land on which your food is grown, and eat incredibly fresh, tasty vegetables. Hills Farm Join in on the fun for your garlic celebration in July! Learn how to plant garlic in the fall! As a member you may camp near our woods, bicycle or four-wheel our township road (official ATV route). Lucas Township has now added wildlife habitat with hiking trails along Gilbert creek only three miles away. Only nine miles away you can canoe or bicycle on/along the Red Cedar Trail, which runs all the way to Downsville, a little country town with one of the best historical restaurants in the Midwest, the Creamery, which sources as much food as possible from local farms, including Sylvan Hills. Our farm has diversity throughout, with open fields of hay and woods with arbors, orchard, and habitat preserve for wildlife. We see rabbits daily, as well as owls, eagles, hawks, raccoons, woodchucks, a badger, coyotes, grass snakes, on rare occasion a fox, and have heard the cry of a lynx in the middle of the night! Located on top of the St. Croix River Valley bluff, panoramic views surround our farm. We continue our well-known quality, picking only vine-ripened shortly before delivery. Drop points include east, west and Mid-town locations. For updates, check out our website. Tangletown Gardens Farm Fresh Food shares will have the quality and creativity you've grown to expect from Tangletown Gardens, going beyond the obvious Farmer’s Market selection. Every week you will receive incredibly flavorful, hard-to-find heirlooms and long-standing kitchen favorites. All produce for the CSA share program is sustainably grown at Tangletown Gardens’ 40-acre farm and greenhouse facility near Plato, Minn. We see sustainability as a responsible way to grow the best quality vegetables, herbs and fruits, while respecting the earth and yielding an amazing array of varieties and intense flavors. We do not use chemical fertilizers or herbicides on our produce, choosing instead to grow flavorful, nutritious food, using sustainable natural methods. Beginning mid-June and continuing through mid-October, members will receive 18 weeks of in-season, freshly picked, naturally grown produce. Members will receive newsletters with special Tangletown Garden Center offers, recipes, and storage tips. Tangletown Gardens is planning farm tours and dinners with local and national chefs to connect diners to the land and the origins of their food. Farm Fresh Food Share participants will be the first to hear of these special farm events and will receive priority ticket offers. Learn more online at www.tangletowngardens.com/market.html. Thorn Crest Farm We have been growing chemical-free produce at our farm for 22 years, and in 2010 will enter our third season of offering CSA shares. We are committed to caring for our land and providing our members with a wide variety of fresh, nutritious, chemical-free produce. Membership includes a weekly box of produce (enough to typically feed an average family of four; two adults and two children, depending on individual vegetable consumption), for about 18 to 20 weeks, depending on the season’s growing conditions. Members can pick up their produce shares at the farm or at a drop-site located at Just Foods co-op in nearby Northfield. (We hope to add additional drop-sites as we increase memberships.) Pick-your-own opportunities are available at the farm at different times throughout the season for those who wish to preserve food. Members are invited and encouraged (at no additional charge) to take advantage of this and come and pick bulk amounts of produce, including peas, green beans, basil, strawberries, raspberries and tomatoes. Cut-your-own flowers are also available as the season progresses. Members are encouraged to stroll around the farm and enjoy the beautiful countryside. We hope you’ll join us for the next growing season; we’d love to be your farmer! Tiny Planet Produce We are only offering 100 shares, delivered on Thursdays. We are also strong supporters of the Harvest for the Hungry program through the Emergency Foodshelf Network that buys local produce for Twin Cities area food shelves. Our full season is 25 weeks from June to November. We also offer a 19-week summer share from June to October. We grow strawberries, raspberries, asparagus, spinach, salad greens, new potatoes, heirloom tomatoes and much more for your CSA boxes.
