Journeyperson Course Details

Qualifications

Prospective Journeypersons should be Farm Beginningsgraduates or beginning and experienced farmers able to demonstrate basic competence in a range of skills and have a solid commitment to making a clear and realistic plan for scaling up and stabilizing their farms. Journeypersons must be farming a piece of land and marketing a product or at the very least, have plans to market a product with a solid and time-bound plan. Anyone considering applying to participate in the course should contact Dori Eder, the Journeyperson course facilitator, via e-mail or at 612-578-4497.

Cost

The cost of the Journeyperson Course is $1,200. This fee helps cover costs associated with conducting the course, putting on retreats (meals and supplies) and paying speakers, as well as financial adviser and production mentor fees. A limited number of partial scholarships ($150, $300 or $600) are available for this year's Journeyperson course.

Lodging is not included in the tuition for retreats. Plan for additional lodging costs. Limited, first-come, first-serve free lodging options may become available through LSP's Farmer Network and other LSP supporters.

LSP works hard to keep costs as affordable as possible for participants. A fee of $200 is due with your application. The balance is due at the November 2017 retreat. A payment plan for the balance can be worked out if needed, especially if your current financial plan didn’t anticipate this expense but could accommodate it in 2018. To discuss the cost and payment plan options, please e-mail LSP's Dori Eder or call her at 612-578-4497.

Course Requirements

Participants in the Journeyperson Course commit to attending all retreats and participate in the curriculum, which includes the completion of a Holistic Financial Plan (planning process is taught during retreats), as well as completion of activities associated with communication, quality of life and meeting personal and family needs. They also commit to meeting with an assigned financial adviser and with a production mentor, and interacting with class peers and course facilitators.

Matched Savings Opportunity

Participants in the Journeyperson Course can start a Matched Savings Account with LSP. This allows farmers to personally invest up to $2,400 over a two-year period, saving $100 per month. LSP will match the monthly savings, for a total of $2,400 over a two-year period. At the conclusion of the Journeyperson Course, Journeypersons will have up to $4,800 of combined personal and LSP funds to invest in a wealth-generating farm asset. For more information, see the Matched Savings Account page.
