LSP Winona County History

Land Stewardship Project members in Winona County have organized and worked for many years for county-level policies that protect the land and water, and support family-sized farms and rural communities.

This includes getting a soil erosion ordinance passed in the 1980s to combat excessive erosion, organizing successfully in the 1990s to pass one of the strongest feedlot ordinances in Minnesota to ward off factory livestock farms, and working in 2010 to pass the county's new land use ordinance that protected Winona County's blufflands from development and also added public "right to know" language and enforcement measures for large-scale manure spills.
