
Soils & Forage Workshop April 19 in Lamberton

LAMBERTON, Minn.—Soil management and the establishment of forages on the farm will be the focus of a special workshop Saturday, April 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton (23669 130th St.). There is no charge for this event. A free-will donation lunch will be provided. The workshop will feature morning presentations on soil science basics, management of a soil’s biological community, organic matter management and how to deal with compaction. In the afternoon, there will be field and laboratory demonstrations on identifying and managing risks when establishing forages, forage legume identification and choosing forage plants for organic livestock production. There will be a lunchtime discussion on the management of veterinary health on organic farms.
Speakers include a soil scientist, an agronomist and the Organic Agriculture Coordinator at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center.
This workshop is sponsored by the Land Stewardship Project, the University of Minnesota’s Southwest Research and Outreach Center and the USDA’s Risk Management Agency.
