NEW PRAGUE, Minn. A walking tour of a reclaimed stretch of eroded Sand Creek will take place Aug. 29 at the Dave and Florence Minar farm north of New Prague. The Sand Creek Watershed team will host the event, which will begin at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge and everyone is welcome.
Participants will see up-close the work accomplished last fall to remediate an eroded portion of the stream bank using on-site logs and soil. No concrete or steel was used, and vegetation now covers the new bank. Because of silt and debris in the channel, Sand Creek had dug its way into a bordering pasture. The property line ended up over the creek instead of alongside it.
The program includes presentations by the Minars, who own the grass-based Cedar Summit Farm, watershed team member Bob Austin, who did the excavation work, and Larry Gates of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. They will explain how low-input renovation efforts seem to be working and the bigger impacts those efforts can have on water quality, soil erosion, farm finances, and even the aesthetics of the watershed landscape.
The Sand Creek Watershed Team is a group of local residents and others interested in the well-being of Sand Creek from a functional as well as aesthetic point of view. This is another in a series of public events it is hosting to showcase Sand Creek and illustrate its importance to people who live in the watershed.
Cedar Summit Farm is located at the corner of County Road 2 and County Road 15. The event will take place just north of the intersection on County Road 15; watch for signs. For more information, please call the Minars at 952-758-3540, or Caroline van Schaik at the Land Stewardship Projects Twin Cities office, 651-653-0618.
