'Make Your Soil Smoke' Field Day

  • Blooming Prairie & Austin, Minn.
  • RSVP to Shona Snater, LSP, 507-523-3366, ssnater@landstewardshipproject.org

The Land Stewardship Project's Soil Builders' Network is co-sponsoring a field day on soil health and cover crops, which will be held on farms in the Blooming Prairie and Austin areas. A carpool will leave from Lewiston, Minn., at 7:15 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 9, and we will drive to the Blooming Prairie location. After that event, the LSP caravan will stop at the farm of "Cover Crop Champion" Tom Cotter in Austin, Minn., to look at his interseeding equipment. We will then return to Lewiston by 6:30 p.m.

For more information or to RSVP for the event, call LSP's Shona Snater at 507-523-3366 or e-mail her at ssnater@landstewardshipproject.org.

Mark Ditlevson will be the host of the Blooming Prairie event. Key speakers include Ditlevson (he farms both ridge-till and no-till systems), Ohio farmer and retired Natural Resources Conservation Service soil scientist Frank Gibbs, and cover crop expert Sarah Carlson of Practical Farmers of Iowa. Gibbs will demonstrate his "smoking soil" method for gauging compaction and rainfall infiltration levels. A food truck will be available for meal purchase.
