The Olmsted County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a soil health field day at the SWCD research plot (704 Silver Creek Rd. NE) in Rochester, Minn., on Friday, Aug. 10. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m .with the event beginning at 10 a.m. and going until 12:30 p.m., with a lunch to follow.
Field day topics will include interseeding into corn, soil health and its affects on weed control, incorporating livestock into cover crops and looking at on-farm nitrogen trials. Farmers will view and discuss seeding mixes, methods, successes and failures and which herbicides to use when interseeding into corn.
Also, come and learn how many producers are seeing a reduction in weed control costs after introducing cover crops and view grazing and forage crops designed for livestock producers interested in getting the most of their land and benefiting their herd. Lastly, the SWCD will analyze the results from over three years of southeastern Minnesota on-farm nitrogen trails and share insights into how farmers might maintain yields while reducing nitrogen management costs.
