The Land Stewardship Project, in conjunction with Witness For Peace, will host a public conversation with Mexican farmer and conservationist Fermina Zarate Dominguez on Oct. 26 at LSP’s southeastern Minnesota office in Lewiston.
The evening begins with a potluck supper at 6:15 p.m., followed by a presentation (in Spanish and English) and discussion at 7 p.m. Please RSVP to LSP’s Lewiston office by calling 507-523-3366 or e-mailing email@example.com.
In 2016 and 2018, rural LSP member-delegations visited the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, and with Dominguez and her organization CEDICAM. CEDICAM, (Center for Integral Campesino Development of the Mixteca), is an organization that is rescuing the traditional and sustainable cultures of the Mixteca Alta region in Oaxaca. The Mixteca region has lost an average of 15 feet of topsoil since the beginning of Spanish colonization in the 1500s. Since 2003, Dominguez has been part of the technical team of CEDICAM, promoting her experiences of soil conservation, reforestation of native trees, rainwater recollection, conservation of native seeds and food production, while promoting the importance of conserving a local food culture.
Fermina has a small farm where she experiments with agro-ecological technologies based on the farmer-to-farmer methodology of learning by doing and teaching through example. She is a mother to two daughters and a son, who have followed in their parents' steps in CEDICAM.
