Journeyperson Course Details

Prospective Journeypersons should be Farm Beginnings graduates or beginning and experienced farmers able to demonstrate basic competence in a range of skills. They must also have a solid commitment to making a clear and realistic plan for scaling up and stabilizing their farms. Journeypersons must be farming a piece of land and marketing a product.

The cost of the Journeyperson Course is $800. This fee helps cover costs associated with conducting the course, putting on retreats (meals and supplies), and providing speakers, as well as production mentor fees. Working with a financial adviser is a requirement of the course. The cost of financial advising services is not included in the course fee, but there are scholarships and tax credits available that can cover or partially cover these fees.

Lodging for the retreats is not included in the tuition. Plan for additional lodging costs up to but no greater than $200.

LSP works hard to keep costs as affordable as possible for participants. A fee of $200 is due with your application. The $800 balance is due at the November retreat. A payment plan for the $800 balance can be worked out if needed, especially if your current financial plan didn’t anticipate this expense.

Course Requirements

Participants in the Journeyperson Course commit to attending all retreats and participating in the curriculum, which includes the completion of a Holistic Financial Plan (planning process is taught during retreats), as well as completion of activities associated with communication, quality of life, and meeting personal and family needs. They also commit to meeting with an assigned financial adviser and with a production mentor and interacting with class peers and course facilitators.

Matched Savings Opportunity

Participants in the Journeyperson Course start a matched savings account. This allows farmers to personally invest up to $2,400 over a two-year period, saving $100 per month. LSP will match the monthly savings, up to $2,400 over a two-year period. At the conclusion of the Journeyperson Course, Journeypersons will have up to $4,800 of combined personal and LSP funds to invest in a wealth-generating farm asset.
