What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

At their most fundamental level, CSA farms provide a weekly delivery of sustainably produced food to consumers during the growing season (approximately June to October). Those consumers, in turn, pay a subscription fee. But CSA consumers don’t so much “buy” food from particular farms as become “members” of those farms. CSA operations provide more than just food; they offer ways for eaters to become involved in the ecological and human community that supports the farm.

The farms listed in this directory have paid a fee to the Land Stewardship Project to be included. The Land Stewardship Project is not a certification agency for Community Supported Agriculture farms and does not guarantee customer satisfaction.

Please keep in mind that while membership in a CSA farm means sharing in the bounty of the season, it also means sharing in the risks. At times, raising food in the Upper Midwest can be made quite challenging by inclement weather, pest infestations and other factors beyond the farmers’ control. We encourage you to contact the farms directly and ask questions to determine what best fits with your needs, lifestyle and schedule. We recommend reading the “Selecting a CSA Farm” and “Questions to Ask a CSA Farmer” guides below before beginning your search for a CSA operation that fits you best.

Good luck as you take that first step into an exciting sector of our food system!

Selecting a CSA

It is often difficult to choose which CSA farm to join. While membership in a CSA farm includes a weekly share of fresh produce (and increasingly, meat and other products), other factors may vary from farm-to-farm. You may want to refer to this list* when choosing a farm:

  • Location: The CSA farms listed in this directory are located throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. You should keep in mind the driving distance to the pick-up site or the farm when considering your level of involvement and the involvement expectations of the farm.
  • Pick-up site/Delivery Day: The CSA farms listed have various delivery or pick-up dates. Most farms deliver shares to a common pick-up site, but a few will deliver your share to your door, while others require you to pick up your share at the farm or help with deliveries.
  • Length of Season/Number of Deliveries: The length of season and number of deliveries varies among the farms. Most begin in May or June and run through September or October. Some farms have an optional winter delivery for an additional cost.
  • Types of Produce and Other Food Items: Most of the CSA farms offer a wide variety of seasonal vegetables. Some farms offer unusual varieties while others may add extras to their standard shares. Some farms may give members the option to buy honey, fruit, flowers, eggs, wool/yarn, meat or other specialties at an additional cost.
  • Opportunities for Involvement: Community building is an important part of the CSA approach; most farms encourage you to become involved. Some farms plan seasonal festivals or special events while others encourage their members to just “drop by.” Some farms expect involvement in the farm as part of membership.

*Ideas and wording used for this list taken from FairShare Community Supported Agriculture.

Questions to Ask a CSA Farmer

As the number of CSA farms has grown in the region over the years, eaters interested in knowing the faces behind their food have been offered more choices than ever. However, increased choice can bring with it some challenges. How do you choose the farm that best fits your needs and is most likely to provide a satisfying experience?

Below are a few questions that should be asked of any farmer you are considering entering into a CSA relationship with. Potential CSA members should not be shy about asking such questions — and a good CSA farmer should be forthcoming with answers. After all, this is about creating a trusting relationship built on good food, good stewardship and good friendships.

  • How many years have you been farming?
  • How many seasons have you been doing a CSA?
  • Have you ever worked or trained on another CSA farm?
  • What vegetables do you plan to provide to shareholders?
  • What is the size of a share? Do you offer half shares?
  • What is your system for storing and transporting the produce once it is harvested?
  • At the drop-off locations, is the produce left in a sheltered area?
  • How do you view the CSA notion of shared risk/shared bounty?
  • Are farm members welcome on the farm, and what community events are held?
  • Is there a farm work requirement?

Abraham’s Table Farm is a small, sustainable farm producing organic vegetables, pasture raised soy-free eggs and chicken, and grass-fed beef. We service the Twin Cities Metro Area and Pine County with our CSA/subscription service. Our CSA is fully customizable each week, runs for 20 weeks and has multiple add-on options for eggs, chicken, and beef. We also provide both door delivery and drop-site pickup options. Shares are generous and geared towards people who are serious about cooking at home.

Owned by Joel and Megan Barr and growing on just 20 acres, our farm is truly a small family farm. We farm with a team of five, who are all paid livable wages. We are dedicated to soil health as a basis for deeply nutritious food that can build and sustain healthy human bodies. We choose to sell through a small and committed CSA program because we value the long term relationships and community that it nurtures. Because those relationships are so vital to the ongoing success of the farm, care of the Earth, and health of our bodies, we seek to produce consistent media content to update our members and provide regular opportunities for our community to visit and get involved on the farm.

Our farm is for people who are serious about nutrition, want to personally know their farm and farmer, and cook at home regularly.

Amador Hill Farm and Orchard is a certified organic vegetable and apple farm and a program of the Women’s Environmental Institute (WEI). Our farm is located in Almelund, Minn., and helps support and serve WEI’s educational mission. WEI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to agricultural, food, and environmental justice.

Becoming a CSA member helps support this mission by supporting the demonstration farm and educational programs. We offer three seasonal CSAs: Spring Greens (April 29-June 3), Peak Summer Gourmet (July 8-Aug. 26), and Autumn Bounty (Sept. 16-Oct. 21). We deliver all of our CSA shares on Fridays to drop-sites in the Twin Cities, North Branch, and Wyoming. CSA members get special invitations to the farm and are invited to become a part of the farm community. Workshare options, CSA pricing, drop-site list, and EBT/SNAP options can be found at the Amador Hill Farm website or by calling 651-583-0705.

For residents in the North Branch, Taylors Falls, and Cambridge area, check out the North Circle online website (www.northcircleonline.org); this is an east-central Minnesota online farmers’ market, which is another program of the Women’s Environmental Institute. The online market runs from June to October, providing a virtual market representing 12 different local farms committed to sustainable and organically certified farming practices.

We also grow farmers, gardeners, and others looking for sustainability, as well as environmental and farm-related classes. Check out our education program — Down to Earth: Sustainability and Justice Education.

Awlyahsi·yó· (awl-yah-SEE-yo) is a collaboration between two young farmers, Mallory and Lucas, along with youth apprentices who work and learn on our farm. We started farming together to honor the seeds we each have grown and been given so far. Between us, there are over 100 different varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers that we grow at our farm! Because we grow mostly from our own saved seeds, we’re excited to offer many unique varieties in our CSA that aren’t typically found anywhere else.

Every week we pass on stories of the amazing produce in your box, whether it’s a special variety from our own collection, or a little-known fact about a well-known food. You can visit our website for more details about types of CSA shares, Twin Cities Metro drop-off locations, customer testimonials, and pricing. There are also more details there about our growing practices. Not only are we certified organic, our produce goes above and beyond organic standards too. In addition to providing top tier produce, Awlyahsi·yó· offers apprenticeships for youth who are beginning their seed keeping journey. We provide emerging seed keepers with guidance, mentorship, and a safe place to grow with their seeds.

Awlyahsi·yó· is a word in Lucas’ native language of Oneida that means “good heart.” We feel that we need to have a good heart, a good mind, and a good spirit when we’re farming. Since talking with elder language speakers in his community, Lucas has found a more accurate way of saying “good heart.” That word is Yawelyahsi·yó· (Yah-well-yah-SEE-yo). In 2022, we plan to update our name to reflect that change and honor the language.

We are experienced growers and have been providing safe, pesticide-free produce to local distributors, restaurants, grocery stores, and the local community for several decades.

We have had a CSA program for many years. Over these years we have learned that flexibility is very important. The year 2022 marks the fourth year of our flexible CSA program. Our Flex CSA Program offers the following benefits:

  • Partnership with Axdahl Farms, your local farm.
  • Expanded time period to enjoy local produce. You’re not limited to just 18 weeks!
  • Flexibility to get the quantities and varieties of produce that fit your needs and schedule. No set time or day to pick up a box!
  • Ability to include flowering plants, veggies, herbs and more for your own personal gardens.
  • Knowledge of where your food comes from.
  • Ensuring the success of a local farm and the families we employ.
  • Strengthening our local economy by keeping food dollars here.
  • Sharing in the rewarding experience of being connected with your food, the land, and the farmer.

When you sign-up, you’ll receive a prepaid gift card good for everything we offer at our farm market in Stillwater, including our delicious seasonal produce. CSA members will also share in our bounties when we have extra sweet corn and/or other goodies.

Weather permitting, May starts out our season with asparagus, fresh herbs and lettuces as well as other greenhouse/high tunnel grown produce. April and May means bedding plants, and veggie and herb plants. Summer veggies include sweet corn, green beans, zucchini, and yellow squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, and more. Fall brings pumpkins (including our Pick-Your-Own Patch!), winter squash, Brussels sprouts and more. The Christmas season becomes a winter wonderland at Axdahl’s. You can use your CSA membership card for fresh cut trees, garland, custom decorated wreaths, and other holiday décor.

Big River Farms is a certified organic food hub, operated by The Food Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our mission is to build a sustainable food system based on social, economic, and environmental justice through education, training, and community partnerships. We aggregate produce grown by beginning farmers who face discrimination in food and farming systems and are enrolled in our land-based education program.

As a CSA member, you’ll support BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & people of color) and New American (immigrant and refugee) farmers and our food justice mission. Our CSA operates 18 weeks from mid-June through mid-October. We offer certified organic vegetables in two share sizes: full shares (¾ bushel) and half shares (½ bushel).

These veggie shares are both delivered once a week over the 18-week CSA season. Half shares contain 5-7 different produce items each week, suitable for 1-2 people, while full shares contain 10-12 items, suitable for 3-5 people.

We also offer two types of certified organic, locally grown fruit shares sourced from two farm partners in nearby Wisconsin and Minnesota. Fruit shares can be purchased separately, or as add-on options during the CSA sign-up process. Subsidized shares for EBT-SNAP customers are also available through our partnership with FairShare CSA Coalition (up to 75% off the total cost): https://www.csacoalition.org/partner-shares.

Blackbrook Farm is a certified organic, diversified family farm. We grow vegetables and herbs for a 100-member CSA, direct online farmstand sales, and local farm-to-table restaurants. We also raise pastured hogs for pork, Scottish Highland cattle for beef and certified organic broiler chickens.

Our 140-acre farm is located 60 miles outside of the Twin Cities in Amery, Wis. As organic farmers, our practices include using cover crops, green manures, crop rotations, and animal manures. We never use chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or pesticides. We believe strongly in building our soils for the generations to come. We offer a Customized CSA for both our Summer and Fall Shares. When you sign-up for a CSA with our farm, we will create a customized box based on your preferences. You will be able to view, change, swap and add products for others that are available. For example, don’t like eggplant? You can give it a low score and never see an eggplant in your box. Love carrots? You can swap more for a different crop you don’t want or also add-on more to your order.

We offer full- and half-share options to our members. Our boxes start in mid-June and run weekly or bi-weekly for 16 weeks. Our Fall Share is a 2- or 4-week share extension. We grow many crops, including everything from tomatoes and potatoes and fresh herbs to carrots, spinach, broccoli, strawberries, and sweet corn. We also offer a locally-grown and harvested Mushroom Share add-on and weekly pastured pork, organic chicken, and grass-fed beef, as well as local honey add-ons.

We deliver our CSA boxes on Thursdays to many Twin Cities and surrounding area locations, including Stillwater and western Wisconsin (you can find this information on our website under our CSA information) and also offer on-farm pickup. In addition to your produce, you will receive a weekly e-newsletter with updates from the farm, pictures, recipes, the contents of the box, and what is to come the following week. For 2022, we will be focusing once again on our Farmers’ Market Shares. Like a traditional CSA, our members pay ahead for their season’s vegetables. Unlike a traditional CSA, our members attend the farmers’ market when they want, and take home only the vegetables that they choose. This works with a prepaid account, which comes in three amounts. With each level, members receive an additional value to their share. If you do not attend the market any given week, then no value is lost on your account and any unused credit rolls over to the following season!

Members receive a weekly newsletter with recipes and specials. We attend three markets in Minneapolis on Saturdays: Mill City Farmers’ Market (downtown Minneapolis), Northeast Minneapolis Farmers’ Market, and the Midtown Farmers’ Market (South Minneapolis). On Sunday mornings, we attend the Saint Paul Farmers’ Market (downtown Saint Paul). To see what we grow, when it is available, and our market price list, please visit the farm website.

Since 2006, Burning River Farm has been growing delicious, chemical free vegetables for our members and customers. With an extensive cover crop rotation, no plastic mulches, and no chemicals used, we grow your produce with your health and the health of the soil as a priority. See you at the market!

Country Taste Farm CSA has been serving central Minnesota for 12 years. The fruits and vegetables we grow express our most basic values: to provide naturally grown, nutrient-rich, exceptionally tasty, environmentally-friendly foods.

Country Taste Farm uses Integrated Pest Management and Sanidate 5.0 produce wash and disinfectant. Most food-borne illnesses are caused by E. coli, listeria, and salmonella. Sanidate has been proven to reduce 99.9% of these pathogens. Produce is grown using plastic mulch for weed protection and drip irrigation. We have four high tunnels which protect the plants from frost, hail, and cool weather to give a longer growing season. We continue to build our soil using a base of natural turkey fertilizer to increase soil organic matter and microbial activity. We add the missing elements to the soil to help us grow farm fresh, nutritionally dense, tasty fruits and vegetables.

We have seven acres under cultivation. 2022 CSA membership include 16-18 weeks from mid-June to October, choice of 2 sizes: ¼ Share (¼Bushel) ½ Share (1/2 Bushel). Farm pick-up Mondays through Thursdays, 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. Deliveries: Cambridge to Blaine, Tuesdays 12 p.m.-2 p.m., (Hwy. 95-Hwy 10); Dalbo to Viking Blvd., Thursdays 12 p.m. – 2 p.m., (Hwy. 95-Hwy. 10). On-farm store open to the public Wednesdays and Thursdays, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Some of the fruits and vegetables we provide include: apples, asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, garlic, lettuce, melons, onions, peppers sweet and hot, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, raspberries, strawberries, sweet corn, squash, tomatoes and zucchini.

Farm Farm CSA is a chemical-free produce farm that was founded in 2011. We provide shares to over 200 members from early June to the end of December. CSA is the backbone of our farm and our members receive the best produce that we grow. With over ¼ of an acre of greenhouses and high tunnels (12.5% of our production space), we are able to grow produce extra early and extra late in the season, resulting in each delivery having a great variety of high-quality produce.

Every effort is taken to ensure that our soils are well balanced with high fertility so your food is as nutrient-dense as possible. With only 2 acres in production, we rely on intensive and human scaled production techniques. In order to maintain high quality, biologically active soils, we employ no-till practices, compost is used to meet much of the fertility needs of the farm, and we never ever use chemicals!

We have Full Shares and Half Shares available for both the summer and winter season for a total of 26 weeks of CSA. Our pick-up locations are in Minneapolis (E. Lake Dogwood Coffee Co., Seward Friendship Co-op), Minnetonka (Lakewinds Co-op), Long Lake (Harvest Moon Co-op), Delano (Lupine Brewery), Buffalo (Abundant Kitchen), and Princeton (at the farm).

Why join Fresh Earth Farms?

  • Truly Local: We are located in the Twin Cities just 20 minutes from downtown Saint Paul. Your money stays local to support the Twin Cities economy. Our property taxes support Minnesota, Washington County, and the local school district. Very few food miles.
  • Real CSA Farm: Community Supported Agriculture is a business model, not a box of produce. Every member shares in the success of the farm. All the produce we grow goes to our members (or local food shelves). No competition from alternative sales channels (e.g. farmers’ markets, wholesale).
  • Small, Family Farm: We don’t skimp on customer service. Have a question? Talk directly to the farmer! We provide personalized service to all our members. You won’t compete with grocery stores for our attention — or our produce.
  • Support Community: We donate excess produce to Twin Cities food shelves. We hire only local Twin City residents and students. We donate shares to local nonprofit organizations and schools.
  • Support Other Small Family Farms: We re-sell organic fruit, mushrooms, coffee, and eggs from similar small family farms.
  • Sustainably Grown: Through the use of cover crops, rotations and organic inputs, we provide nutritious, delicious fruits, vegetables, and herbs while improving the soil for future generations.

Gale Woods Farm is owned and managed by Three Rivers Park District. It is a 410-acre park with the mission of demonstrating small-scale, productive, contemporary, sustainable agriculture and offering farming-related educational opportunities to school groups and the general public. The park includes gardens and orchards, an educational barn, pasture-raised beef cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens, several miles of hiking trails, canoeing, and fishing.

The CSA operation involves teenaged youth from surrounding communities in growing produce for the shares. In addition to learning about sustainable agriculture, they are given leadership-training opportunities and inspiration to create positive change in their communities. Produce is also provided to the Mound Westonka food shelf and STEP in Saint Louis Park.

The market season runs for 18 weeks from mid-June to mid-October. Pre-paid Farm Market Credits, which provide 20% extra value, are available for the on-farm market stand on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, with the flexibility to buy the amounts you need. Credits may also be used at the farm store during the week, for produce only. The Saturday market is also open for the general public to purchase produce. Eggs, meat, maple syrup, honey, and other products raised at Gale Woods are available for purchase in the farm store. For sign-up information and pricing, please contact us.

Open Hands Farm is a 20-acre certified organic CSA farm located just two miles north of Northfield, Minn. We think that healthy food should not be a luxury, and that a CSA share is an inexpensive way to enjoy organic vegetables and fruit. Our shareholders come to the farm once-a-week from early June through the third week of October to pick-up their share of each week’s harvest, and can mix and match the in-season produce to meet their household’s likes and needs.

We also offer an abundant u-pick section (for shareholders only). The u-pick includes strawberries, peas, beans, herbs, cherry tomatoes and flowers, and is well-loved by people of all ages. U-pick crops are usually available on a take-what-you-can-use basis, and are a great opportunity for fresh eating, freezing, canning, and/or drying. We aim to have more than enough food available for our shareholders. The leftovers from CSA pick-ups are donated to the local food shelf in order to share this fresh, nutritious food with our friends and neighbors in need.

We believe in growing food sustainably and creating community around food, and have been happily farming here since 2006.

Shepherd Moon Farm is located on 50 acres in the St. Croix River Valley. We are a family-run and female-operated farm committed to caring for the Earth, creating a vibrant local community, and developing the local economy. Our stewardship practices include growing vegetables free of chemicals using crop rotations, limited tillage, green manures, animal manure, and mulching. In 2017, Julie’s mother, who started the CSA 13 years ago, passed the farm down to Julie. As the owner and operator, this is Julie’s 6th season growing food on the land she grew up on.

Main season shares run for 17-18 weeks, June through October. A full-share is a bushel each week and feeds a family of four. Half-shares are a half-bushel every week — great for a family of two. There are options for additional shares as well — fall shares in November and December, spring shares in April and May, and add-on boxes for processing vegetables throughout the main season. We offer a sliding scale fee to make fresh produce available to everyone. Pick-up is on Thursdays. You can come to the farm to pick-up your share or pick- up in the Midtown Phillips neighborhood in Minneapolis. We grow a large variety of produce with 8 to 18 different vegetables, herbs, and occasional berries available each week.

We have a work requirement so our members can become more familiar with the farm. Come share in the experience of planting, growing, and harvesting by visiting the farm!

StrongHeart Farms is a 2-acre mixed vegetable farm located in the St. Croix River Valley, just north of Stillwater, Minn. This is our second year in operation and we will be offering a Summer CSA membership AND a Fall CSA membership. We will be delivering our CSA shares to multiple drop-sites across Stillwater, St. Paul, and Minneapolis.

All of our produce shares are pre-packed and pre-determined based on the crops we have in abundance and in season. We offer both small and large produce shares; our small shares contain 6-8 veggies per week and our large shares contain 8-10 veggies per week.

Our farm is rooted in the idea of reciprocity. We base many of our farming practices in the give-and-take relationships we have with our food, our soils, and our community. This mission grounds us and has allowed us to implement many regenerative practices on our farm. We never apply any chemicals, we support our plants and the soil microbiota with compost and compost teas, and we plant a diverse array of crops to maintain a healthy ecological system. We also use an intensive cover cropping system to return organic matter back to the soil. All of these practices allow us to raise the most nutrient-dense produce possible so we can nourish our community to the fullest.

With the rising cost of food and continued supply chain issues, our communities are facing ever increasing uncertainty. Many are left asking: Where will our food come from? A more secure and sustainable food system is within our reach. If we increased direct sales of food in Minnesota to 1% of all agricultural sales, we’d have an additional $76.25 million going directly to farmers.

We need you with us to make sure we can make this a reality! Join Land Stewardship Project members and supporters on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in Appleton, Minn.

Come and share your ideas about how we can connect farmers, consumers, and food businesses to coordinate markets and support economic development through local foods. We’ll also talk about how the next Farm Bill can help direct federal resources toward community food security, health, and economic vitality.

LSP Deep Canvassing Training
Tuesday August 23
12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Deep canvassing is a candid, non-judgmental, two-way conversation where canvassers ask voters to share their relevant, emotionally significant experiences and reflect on them aloud. It is one of the most durable and proven forms of persuasion when talking to people who might hold differing beliefs than you and is going to be critical in creating the world we want and need.

Join the Land Stewardship Action Fund to learn about deep canvassing, what it is and why it’s important, and get trained on how to deep canvass so you’re able to powerfully participate in LSAF’s upcoming deep canvasses and put these important skills to use in your community. Register at https://secure.everyaction.com/E1P8BQcq0EizUZLDvtQwUw2.
