Are you a beginning farmer looking to rent or purchase farmland in the Midwest? Or are you an established farmer/landowner in the Midwest who is seeking a beginning farmer to purchase or rent your land, or to work with in a partnership situation?

The Land Stewardship Project’s Farm Beginnings program has simple application forms available for people seeking farmland or farmers. (You can find the forms to the right).

Once the form is filled out, the information can be circulated by LSP via the Land Stewardship Letter, LIVE-WIRE and through our various networks. For more information, contact LSP’s Karen Stettler via e-mail or at 612-767-9885; or LSP’s Robin Moore via e-mail or at 612-767-9480.

Listings included on this web page will be removed after 60 days. If you would like the listing to be renewed after 60 days, please e-mail Moore or Stettler. Below are our latest Seeking Farmers-Seeking Land Clearinghouse listings:

Seeking Farmland to Buy: Minnesota (Southeast)

Missy and Paul are looking to purchase 40 to 100 acres and transition conventional land to a regenerative model in the driftless region of Minnesota (Goodhue, Wabasha, Winona counties within two hours of Saint Paul). They hope to work with the current landowner to understand the history of the land and strategies employed in the past to inform the future of the farm. They are looking for a mix of forest and crop land, with a variety of soil types and topographies that provide opportunities to preserve or restore features such as a river, creek, or wetlands. They envision the property as a laboratory for agricultural, forestry, and sustainability projects led by educators and scientists and drawing on local expertise. They look forward to learning with and participating in the local community. They will access the resources of the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for projects that could involve carbon sequestration, prairie restoration, or oak savannahs. They are excited by the potential for collaborative learning as well as cooperative ownership. Their goal is to have some positive impact on the climate change by demonstrating the possibilities of land stewardship and regenerative practices and telling those stories. A residential writing fellowship located on the farm will help promote successes as well as our missteps. Housing or outbuildings are necessary. Overall transition timing is flexible, however, they need to formally close by April 19.

Seeking Farmer: Wisconsin

Rachel and Anton are seeking a farmer to join their operation or work for them in an effort to balance life and work as their operation matures and grows. Mary Dirty Face Farm near Menomonie, WI (60 acres total, 10 acres in fruit and 20 in pasture) is a certified organic orchard, with apples, pears, plums, currants, raspberries, blueberries, and some other fruit on 5 1/2 acres, as well as a new orchard with about 6 acres of apples coming into production. Rachel and Anton own and operate the farm, which they established in 2009. We market through a CSA-style fruit share, farmers markets, and small wholesale accounts. Their farm is primarily focused on sustainable fresh fruit production, incorporating regenerative ag practices to achieve this. Over the time they have been farming, they have experimented with a lot of different species and methods and are always learning and changing. They are very involved in sustainable farming organizations and Wisconsin Farmers Union and are excited to be able to share what they have learned.  They also have land and resources (pasture with permanent fencing, temporary fencing, woods, irrigation, buildings and other infrastructure, equipment) that could support additional enterprises, and are interested in partnerships to that end. They are willing to train and teach organic management of perennial fruits; pest and disease scouting and preventative practices; marketing of uncommon fruits; on-farm fruit processing; use of hand tools and orchard specific tools; rotational grazing, fencing and set up of water lines; livestock management; whole-farm resource management.
