Nitrogen, including nitrogen from manure and commercial fertilizer, has been over-applied as a form of yield insurance, shaped by farming traditions, financial incentives, sales practices, and knowledge gaps about agronomically sound rates. Without greater accountability and action, these practices continue to degrade soil health, water quality, and public health.

Farmers can be productive and profitable while also protecting our water, soil, and health. Together, we can move beyond the idea that more nitrogen is always better by supporting farmers with trusted guidance, fair policies, and industry accountability that reduces over-application, strengthens rural communities, and preserves the land for the future.

Rethinking Nitrogen for Healthy Soil and Clean Water

Lost Nitrogen = Lost Dollars

The most profitable nitrogen is the nitrogen the crop actually uses. Reducing nitrogen loss is not just an environmental goal — it is a direct driver of agricultural economic resilience. When nitrogen is lost, farmers' financial resources are wasted. Improving nutrient timing and precision placement directly increases return on investment. Over time, soil health practices reduce dependence on costly inputs, keeping capital where it delivers the highest economic return — with the farmers themselves.
The Problem Is Known — Action is What’s Missing

The industry does not lack knowledge — it lacks widespread adoption. Decades of data and farmer experience already show how to eliminate nitrate runoff. However, current market incentives lock operations into a high-input rut that rewards maximizing fertilizer volume over optimizing crop needs. Best management practices will only go so far. Meaningful progress requires shifting systemic incentives, holding over-application accountable, and introducing crop diversity to build resilient soil health.
Farmers Manage Risk

Farming is fundamentally a risk management business, and producers operate in a high-risk environment where decisions are driven by protecting yield, managing extreme uncertainty, and ensuring financial survival. In this volatile landscape, over-application of fertilizer often functions as an artificial "insurance policy" against yield loss. Ironically, this practice exposes both the farm and the public to greater long-term environmental and financial risk through widespread nitrate pollution. De-risking agriculture requires policy and market frameworks that make risk-reducing conservation practices the safest financial choice.
The System, Not Just Farmers, Must Change

Farmers are not the problem — the system they operate in is. Real agricultural progress requires systemic changes across markets, policy, and industry, rather than shifting the burden entirely onto individual behavior. Producers make daily decisions within a rigid structural framework that heavily limits their operational options. To meaningfully address conservation, the agricultural community must either change what crops are raised or fundamentally change how current crops are managed.
Change is Social as much as Economic

Agricultural conservation is shaped as much by cultural norms as economic realities. Because farming operations are open to constant public observation, a collective "if everyone is doing it, it must be right" mindset creates an acute fear of visible failure. This social pressure heavily disincentivizes producers from deviating from standard ways of doing things, slowing the adoption of superior nitrogen strategies. Overcoming this barrier requires building trusted, collaborative peer networks that actively de-risk innovation, giving neighboring operations the social license and confidence to change.
Clean Water is Common Sense

Clean water is not Republican or Democrat — it is just common sense. Water quality impacts farmers, rural communities, and urban residents alike, completely transcending political divisions. Because contaminated water directly threatens public drinking safety, outdoor recreation, and vital ecosystems, protecting watersheds is a universal necessity rather than a political fight. Improving agricultural nitrogen management provides a practical, people-to-people opportunity to unite rural and urban communities around shared outcomes. Ultimately, when public funds support agriculture, the public deserves a tangible environmental return on that investment.
