A Message from LSP on the COVID-19 Virus

We are writing with an important update on how the Land Stewardship Project is responding as COVID-19 spreads throughout our communities and our world.

In the best interests of the health and well-being of our staff, members, and communities, we have decided to take some important actions. Our work can and must move forward. While we are finding new ways to adapt to this changing environment, the safety of our members and communities must come first.

The goal of the following interventions is to slow the rate of the COVID-19 infection — in effect, “flattening the curve” — in order to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system, reduce the number of fatalities, and limit the suffering of those who contract the virus.

Regarding staff interaction with members:

  • There will be no LSP sponsored events held between March 16 and April 13. Previously scheduled LSP sponsored events during that time period have been cancelled or postponed.
  • There will be no in-person committee meetings held between March 16 and March 25.
  • There will be no in-person one-to-one meetings with members between now and March 23.

Regarding practices for our staff and work spaces:

  • Staff are being encouraged to work remotely between March 16 and April 13.
  • Offices will remain open only to staff during this time.
  • Volunteering in offices will be suspended during this time.

The COVID-19 pandemic is showing in startling clarity just how vulnerable so many of us are, which is why we’re more committed than ever to the work of transforming our farming and food systems, fighting for healthcare for everyone (no exceptions), and building healthy, vibrant, and resilient rural communities.

It is important for us to support each other during this uncertain time. While we cannot meet face-to-face for a time, our staff are already working to identify and create opportunities to stay in relationship and community with one another and to take action. Please stay tuned for more details about those upcoming opportunities.

Stay safe and be well.

Amy Bacigalupo (e-mail) and Mike McMahon (e-mail) are LSP’s co-managing directors.
