Tell Congress: Support Market Access for Farmers by Funding Local Food Purchasing

Take 2 Minutes to Tell Congress to Support the "Local Farmers Feeding Our Community" Act

The Land Stewardship Project and our partners across the nation are calling on Congress to support investment in local foods for our communities. We need to keep the pressure up. Congressional members are responding to our demands for permanent investments for local foods in local nutrition programs. We need your help to keep up the momentum and generate strong support in Congress.

Recently, two bills were introduced that would create permanent programs similar to popular local food purchase assistance programs. They would provide funding for all states, Tribes, and territories to purchase fresh produce, meat, dairy, eggs, and other nutritionally-healthy, locally-grown products from farmers to distribute in food access programs. These programs are a win-win. Supporting local farmers while ensuring that our most vulnerable neighbors have food on their tables builds community resiliency.

You can help us secure additional support by sending a quick e-mail to your Congressional members.

Before you hit send, consider following these tips to increase the effectiveness of your advocacy:

  1. Add one to two sentences at the beginning of the template e-mail that says who you are, what it is that you do, or how you are connected to your local food system. We encourage you to edit the rest of the text as you see fit, or as is most relevant to you.

  1. Edit the subject line so your message stands out. A personalized subject line increases the chance it will be read and not lost among identical messages.

We provided an example subject line; here are some others you can copy and paste (or make your own):

  • Protect our local food system – please support this important piece of legislation.

  • As a [Farmer/Consumer/Business Owner], I am requesting you support our local food economy.

  • As a [Farmer/Consumer/Business Owner], I have concerns about food security in our community.
