HAGER CITY, Wis. — Looking for affordable, quality land to get started farming and don’t know where to start? The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) will be holding a hands-on Farmland Access Workshop Sunday, Sept. 30, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Oxheart Farm in Wisconsin’s Pierce County. For more information, contact LSP’s Karen Stettler at 507-523-3366 or stettler@landstewardshipproject.org.
DIRECTIONS: Oxheart Farm is located about seven miles north of Red Wing, Minn., off of Highway 63 (W7902 290th Ave., Hager City, WI 54014).
During the workshop and tour, farmers Cella Langer and Emmet Fisher will discuss how they accessed their land, and participants will get an opportunity to do their own hands-on land assessments. Realtor Marc Cutter will be on-hand to discuss what to expect when working with a realtor. There will also be an opportunity to hear about additional resources helpful to farmers looking for land. Langer and Fisher are wrapping up their first season on their new farm, but have been farming together for six seasons. They raise a diverse mix of vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, pastured pork, beef and eggs for sale through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and the Red Wing Farmers’ Market. They worked with the USDA Farm Service Agency to get a Direct Farm Ownership Loan for purchasing their farm in 2017. Before that, they rented farmland near Stockholm, Wis.
