LEWISTON, Minn. — Soil health experts Jay Fuhrer and Jon Stika will present on annual cover crops, grazing perennials and planting cash crops into green covers during a Land Stewardship Project (LSP) online workshop Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This event is free, but registration is required by going to https://landstewardshipproject.org/events/item/1576. Jay Fuhrer spent 40+ years working for the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). His groundbreaking work with the nationally known Soil Health Team in Burleigh County, N. Dak., brought together farmers, scientists, and soil conservationists to incorporate the “5 Principles of Soil Health” on numerous crop and livestock farms. Fuhrer has spoken internationally about soil health and now conducts research at Menoken Farm in Burleigh County.

Jon Stika, a retired soil scientist and soil health instructor with the NRCS, is currently a research technician at the North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center. He is also an environmental consultant and contributing writer for AgDaily. Stika is the author of “A Soil Owner’s Manual: How to Restore and Maintain Soil Health,” published in 2016.

During the Feb. 16 workshop, there will be an opportunity to get to know fellow farmers throughout the Midwest in small breakout groups prior to the presentations. Afterwards, there will be a large group discussion with a question-and-answer session.
