You’re invited to an informational session and panel discussion about the power and importance of Soil and Water Conservation Districts!

What is a Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD)? They are local units of government that manage and direct natural resource management programs at the local level. Districts work in both urban and rural settings, with landowners and with other units of government, to carry out programs for the conservation, use, and development of soil, water, and related resources.

What does an SWCD board do? They set overall policy and long-term objectives regarding natural resource management programs for their district and work with the hired SWCD staff to see that policies and plans are implemented.

SWCD board members are on the front lines of the maintenance, support, and promotion of sustainable ag practices at a local level. Board members are leaders who can influence land use practices in their communities in support of clean air, water, and soil, as well as successful farmers. Through education, technical assistance, and financial assistance, a SWCD board member can foster a new land ethic in their community.

The session will include information on what decision-making powers SWCDs have, how their work and decisions impact land stewardship, and what it looks like to be an elected official at this level of government.

We will be offering the same session twice on Monday, May 13, from 1 p.m.- 2:30 p.m., and from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. So register for whichever one works for you!

The field day will start with a free lunch and a short seminar, and end with touring organic swine facilities and organic hybrid rye field.

This field day will showcase how integrating hybrid rye into organic swine production may help with reducing feed and bedding costs in organic pig production based on data collected at the WCROC over the last two years.
