Last year was a tough one for most of us, and, based on recent events, it seems as if there’s little chance of reprieve for folks in agriculture. Farmers and ranchers experienced rising input costs and significant domestic and international market disruptions in 2025. To help address these problems, USDA is issuing $12 billion in one-time payments — but this is just a bandage placed on a bleeding wound. It does nothing to address the root cause of the crisis.
If Congress acts, we can avoid a massive wave of farm foreclosures. Congress is preparing to pass another funding package before Jan. 30 and is considering additional aid for farmers. This is an opportunity to deliver a clear message: we need real relief and real solutions for all farmers and ranchers. One-time payments don’t help all farmers and are not what we need to ensure the long-term viability of farms and ranches here.
This is an important opportunity to protect our farmers and rural communities, as well as shield the American people from economic turmoil and food insecurity. The Land Stewardship Project is working with farmers and partner organizations to send Congress a letter calling for immediate and long-term relief to our farmers in the form of:
- Stable market access for farms of all sizes.
- Support for cost-saving conservation practices which increase farm viability.
- Financial relief — available to all producers — to ensure no farms are lost due to acute financial hardship.
This letter is being circulated by the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, which LSP belongs to. This message will be most impactful coming directly from farmers. Can you help us reach as many farmers as possible with this letter before the Monday, Jan. 19, deadline?

This letter is intended for food producers: commodity growers, diversified farmers, ranchers, fishers, etc. We hope to reach as many aligned growers as possible. After adding your farm’s name to the list of signatories, or if you are not able to sign because you are not a producer, please forward this action alert to five farms you think would appreciate the invitation to be included!
